- James 1:2–4 – “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
Exposition
James does not promise that faith will prevent trials. He promises that trials will produce something in those who hold their faith through them. The language of “trials of many kinds” is deliberately comprehensive — James is not speaking of exotic persecutions. He includes the full texture of human difficulty: business reversal, relational rupture, physical depletion, financial pressure.
The call to “consider it joy” is not emotional management. It is a theological recalibration — seeing difficulty from the perspective of what it is producing, not merely what it is costing. Perseverance is not innate. It is forged. The leader who has not been tested does not know what they are made of. The leader who has been tested and held — they know.
For the BAM leader in a hard season, the invitation is to resist the twin temptations of denial (“this is fine”) and despair (“this is finished”). The third way — perseverance — accepts the reality of the difficulty while holding firmly to the one who is producing something through it.
